Bonjour a tous,
J'espere que vous avez passe de bonnes fetes de fin d'annee!
Nous avons de notre cote passe 15 jours a la grange Piltiere ou nous avons pu feter le Jour de l'an dans notre gite avec notre famille et amis:

We spent 15 days in our Gite(Grange Piltière) where we enjoyed the company of family and friends:
Ci-contre, je prepare en cuisine le plat traditionnel portugais pour ma famille francaise: la Morue au four! J'espere qu'ils vont apprecier!
Left, I am preparing New Year's dinner for ma French family. On the menu: a Portuguese speciality, baked salted codfish. I hope they will like it!
Cote travaux, il n'y a rien de neuf mais nous avons fait quelques courses dans les brocantes et sur E-bay pour acheter du materiel de recuperation pour l'amenagement ultérieur de notre Loft. Ci-dessous, quelques exemples:
No work has been carried out lately but on the other hand we bought a few things to furnish our Loft when the time comes. We went to architectural salvage yards, brocantes and even used E-bay. Below a few examples:
Ci-contre, 22 radiateurs en fonte des annees 50 trouves sur E-bay pour le prix de trois neufs!! Sans compter la GALERE pour les ramener de Bordeaux! Cela en valait quand meme la peine...
Left, 22 cast- iron radiators from the 50's found on E-bay and just for the price of just 3 new ones!! Without taking into account all the hassle to bring them from Bordeaux! I hope it is going to be worth the effort...
Egalement trouvees sur E-bay, des lampes d'usine: 6 noires qui vont probablement finir dans le gite et 12 grises d'une taille exceptionnelle (50 cm de diametre) provenant d'une usine du Perche qui iront dans le loft.
Also found on E-bay, 6 black enameled factory lamps for the gite and 12 exceptionnaly large grey ones which will fit perfectly in our loft.
Et pour finir une photo de Valerie et Alice assises dans notre salon durant une journee tranquille (et pluvieuse) a la campagne:

PS: Cette grande table en chêne(3,50m de longueur) trouvera sa place dans le futur Loft pour lequel elle a eté faite sur mesure...

I've just taken my first look at your blog and was so impressed I thought I ought to add some comment from Scandinavia.
I've been meaning to find out more about your 'pet project' for a while now. The scale of the thing is enormous! I am very impressed with your ambition and from an architectural standpoint, it looks like you're doing a grand job at keeping the character of the place intact. I liked the main steel staircase - it would have been easy to be tempted into a rustic timber stair.
In terms of size, its not dissimilar to a project I'm working on as a loft conversion in central stockholm although thats on the 7th floor (and includes a swimming pool).
I tried to find it on Google Earth but it brought me down in the middle of a field not far from Rennes with no barn in sight.
The stone floor is beautiful, and who knows, you may live to appreciate keeping the piss channels running down the middle of your living room - catering for all eventualities from a visit from your mates to the first days of potty training!
It looks like you've come a long way in 3 years and probably learnt masses in the process. I've often thought about trying a similar project but its a huge step between a vague thought and getting out your wallet. How does it feel 3 years in? Any regrets or would you launch into the same project over again knowing what you know now?
Incidentally, how do you go about ventilating a sprayed insulation roof?
We've been saying for around 3 years now that it'd be cool to come and see you in Porto but events keep taking over and the best we've managed was to send AK's ex. boss down instead.
But you have exciting times ahead in your new home and we wish you the best of luck and happiness there. We'll try and make it there to visit even if we run out of time for Portugal.

I'm happy to know that you're finally working and doing what you like. Good luck with your Loft conversion and send a few pictures if you can...
Yeah, I've learned a lot during this time but mainly on the internet, where I spend much of my free time(which I have lots). I don't have any regrets with the renovation as such but I underestimated the budget!
As for the sprayed insulation, firstly I had the building re-roofed with vents as you'd have normally, then a kind of breathing felt was "stapled" to the under side(rafters) of the whole roof, leaving a gap of air for ventilation and then the polyurethane foam sprayed on it. In England, they spray directly under the tiles! I don't know how they avoid condensation...I'm very happy so far with the results!
You also have exciting times with the arrival of little "Pete"!

Mon prenom est Matthias et ma fiancee s'appelle Connie. Je suis Francais vivant dans les pays Anglo Saxons depuis 9 ans et Connie est Australienne, donc desole pour les fautes d'ortographes.
On est tombe sur votre blog aujoud'hui et je dois dire qu'il va bien me servir pour de l'inspiration et j'espere quelques conseils. Nous avons acheter une vieille grange de 500 metres carres sur deux etages comme la votre avec un toit de 7 a 8 metres de haut a l'etage. Elle se trouve en Auvergne. Comme vous on a eu le coup de foudre pour les murs en pierre et la charpente,qui on se souvient, ressemblait a une coque de bateau renversee.
Je serais interesse a garder contact ou a avoir plus d'info sur votre projet car nous n'avons pas encore commence la renovation. Nous habitons a Londres et avons fait appel a un maitre d'oeuvre. Il nous a donne un cout de 15% pour ses services et nous pensons qu'il y aurait un autre moyen de faire les choses. J'ai lu que vous aviez commence le projet quand vous viviez au Portugal et je voulais savoir comment vous aviez fait.

En ce qui concerne les fautes d'ortographe,ne t'inquietes pas, j'ai le même problème! J'utilise trois langues régulièrement(Portugais,Français et Anglais)et je mélange tout!!!
500 m2 au sol! That's huge! Félicitations pour votre acquisition et je serai heureux de vous aider si je le peux...15% pour un maitre d'oeuvre me parait beaucoup! Le nôtre nous prend 10% mais il y a d'autres options...
